It all begins with an idea…

A six day spring school exploring concepts of the rural idyll, celebrating the present and envisioning our interconnected, sustainable, futures.

What is People & Place, Sykourio?

An Activation Workshop (Summer 2023) and a period of Fieldwork (Spring 2024) leading in the near future to our Spring School Programme (2025); exploring concepts of the rural idyll, celebrating the present and envisioning our interconnected sustainable futures. Following decades of change in rural life and culture, what is next for places like Sykourio?

We use artistic practices, deep listening and mapping methodologies to bring together local knowledge, lived experiences of diaspora and collective memories to create a continuing narrative and inform participatory actions shared and expressed through scoring, sculpture and exhibition.

We invite architectural and visual arts students, young graduates, professionals, researchers and like-minded people with a deep interest in the diverse practices and technologies that we propose to join us.

Yes, but why?

Our school emerges from a longstanding personal relationship with the rural, a desire to engage with storytelling and the professional act of building a body of shared knowledge, materially and intellectually, through collaboration.

Participatory design, circular economies, radical pedagogies, innovation, collective action and significant local community engagement will enable this annual educational event to evolve, unfold and deepen year-on-year.

Inhabiting lived experiences across silos, cross pollinating diversely and with abundance each story shared, each incremental moment will support, we hope, a thoughtful, disproportionate and cumulative growth.
